5 Color House

The project is a transformation of the standard post-war ‘junior five’ house type in western San Francisco. The primary spatial strategy was to open up the house through a diagonal incision that connects front to back, and to simultaneously produce more density and spatial definition through the addition of a series of poche elements. The house has only 3 windows, and derives most of its light from a series of skylights that are sculpted and shaped to produce a set of figural apertures. Each of the five rooms is assigned a major and 2 minor colors based on Le Corbusier’s color system, polychromie architectural.
